Ashley's work is about perceiving bad intentions from seemingly harmless situations. As she has aged, her view of the world shifted from that of a naive child to a skeptical adult. She assumes events and interactions in life to have malicious intent disguised as wholesome opportunities.

This is why Ashley created Sleight of Motive.

The themes of the circus reference her childhood perspectives of the world. The traveling circus is a spectacular realm of mystery, wonder, and magic. It is hidden from sight, under a flamboyant tent and running on smoke and mirrors to deceive its audience. By interjecting questionable imagery into scenes of illustrated wonder, Ashley is able to break down innocent situations and bring skepticism to viewers.
